Four freelance websites are really worth your time if you're in Africa: Upwork, Fiverr, Freelancer.com and, if you're highly skilled, Toptal. They differ most in how much of each payment they keep.

Fiverr keeps 20%. Upwork takes 0–15% and can pay Kenyans straight to M-Pesa. And since January 2026, Nigerians can finally receive PayPal money through Paga. Here's what each site costs and how you get paid, checked against each platform's own pages this month.

Quick comparison: fees and payouts in 2026

Platform What it takes How you get paid Best for

Fiverr Flat 20% commission PayPal (free), Payoneer ($1–3) Beginners, creative gigs
Freelancer.com 10% of the job, $5 minimum PayPal, Skrill, Payoneer debit card ($1 each) Entry-level bidding work

How much does Upwork actually take in 2026?

Upwork dropped its old 20/10/5% tiered fee a while back. Today the Freelancer Service Fee ranges from 0% to 15% per contract. It's set case by case, shown to you before you accept the job, and then fixed for that contract, according to Upwork's own fee policy. Contracts with big enterprise clients usually land around 10%. Upwork Payroll contracts and clients you bring yourself through "Any Hire" carry no fee at all.

For withdrawals, Upwork's payment methods page lists transfers to a local bank outside the US ($0.99 each), a US-dollar wire ($50), PayPal, Payoneer and, for freelancers in Kenya, M-Pesa. That matters: Kenyans can skip the usual Payoneer-to-bank-to-M-Pesa detour that Fiverr and Freelancer.com withdrawals still need, because Payoneer doesn't pay straight to M-Pesa. Nigerians, Ghanaians and South Africans don't get a direct mobile money option on Upwork and still go through Payoneer or PayPal. In Ghana, PayPal still can't receive money at all, so Payoneer is the one that works there.

What does Fiverr charge, and how fast do you get paid?

Fiverr keeps a flat 20% of every order, so you keep 80%, as Fiverr's own help page confirms. Your money then waits 14 days after the order is completed before you can withdraw it (less if you're Top Rated or Fiverr Pro).

Fiverr's payout fee table is specific:

Method Fee Minimum withdrawal Time
PayPal $0 $1 24 hours
Bank transfer via Payoneer $1 $20 1–3 days (local currency)
Payoneer account $3 $10 Up to 2 days

The maximum is $5,000 per withdrawal. Ignore any older guide that recommends the "Fiverr Revenue Card": Fiverr stopped offering it to new sellers in December 2022.

Is Freelancer.com worth bidding on?

Freelancer.com charges 10% of the job, or $5, whichever is higher, on both fixed-price and hourly work (fees and charges page). Withdrawals through Express Withdrawal, PayPal, Skrill or a Payoneer debit card each cost $1; an international wire costs $25; you need at least $50 cleared before you can cash out.

It's one of the oldest marketplaces, so there are thousands of live jobs, but also more price competition from freelancers worldwide than anywhere else. It works best for collecting your first reviews before you move to better-paying platforms.

How hard is it to get into Toptal, and what does it pay?

Toptal is open about being selective: "typically fewer than 3% are accepted" of the thousands who apply each month, according to Toptal's own screening page. You go through a language and personality interview, a skills review, a live interview with an expert in your field, and then a paid 1–3 week test project. The whole process usually takes 3–8 weeks.

Once you're in, day rates for developers, finance professionals and designers are well above Fiverr or Freelancer.com. Toptal's website doesn't explain how freelancers are paid, and it isn't the same Payoneer/PayPal setup the other platforms use, so ask directly once you're accepted rather than assume.

Is there a freelance platform with no commission?

Contra charges freelancers 0% commission and lets clients post jobs for free, according to its own homepage. It leans towards design, marketing, writing and content work rather than being a general marketplace, and it doesn't advertise country restrictions like the bigger sites do. It's a good option if you already find your own clients and want an easy way to invoice and show your work without losing a cut.

Andela, Gebeya and Workana aren't sign-up marketplaces anymore

Older "best freelance sites" lists still recommend Andela, Gebeya and Workana as places Africans can register and start bidding for jobs. That's out of date in 2026.

  • Andela now sells to companies, not individual freelancers. Its own site talks about helping businesses "hire, build AI, and upskill teams" through what it calls the Andela Talent Cloud (andela.com/about-us). You can't create a profile and browse gigs any more.
  • Gebeya has moved the same way: it now licenses a "Talent Cloud" sourcing and vetting platform to organisations, including a partnership with Microsoft, rather than running an open marketplace individuals join directly.
  • Workana, once popular with freelancers generally, now markets itself purely to Latin American talent ("Build your team with Latin America's A-Players," per workana.com) and isn't aimed at African freelancers at all.

If a site recommends any of these as somewhere to "sign up and start applying," that advice hasn't kept up. If you'd rather have one steady employer than piece together gigs, our guide to remote jobs for Africans with no experience covers full-time and part-time employee-style roles instead.

Payoneer or PayPal: which gets your money home cheaper?

It depends on your country. Payoneer's own pricing page lists a flat $1.50 fee to withdraw to a local bank in your own currency, but only in certain countries. Of the countries SwiftPesa covers, only Kenya is on that list. In Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa, withdrawals fall under Payoneer's 1.2%–4% currency-conversion fee instead. That matches what we found when we checked Payoneer's Nigeria fees: 1% to receive, 1.2%–4% to withdraw, plus a $29.95 yearly fee if you receive under $6,000 in any 12 months.

PayPal has had a rougher time in Africa, but 2026 brought a big change for Nigeria. Since 27 January 2026, Nigerians can link PayPal to a Paga wallet and receive money directly in naira. That ends about two decades in which a Nigerian PayPal account could pay but never receive, as TechCabal reported and Nairametrics confirmed. The same reports say PayPal made similar deals with M-Pesa in Kenya and Cashplus in Morocco around September 2025, as part of a $100 million push into African and Middle Eastern payments. Neither report gives the fees for the Nigeria route, so expect a transfer cost, but don't count on an exact figure yet.

Do you have to pay tax on this money?

Yes, in every country SwiftPesa covers. Being paid in dollars by foreign clients doesn't make the income tax-free at home.

Don't wait for a client to send you a tax form. None of these platforms will do that for you.

Common mistakes on freelance sites

  • Upfront "registration" or "training" fees. Upwork, Fiverr, Freelancer.com and Toptal never charge you to join or apply. Anyone asking for a fee before you can start is running a scam.
  • Clients pushing you off-platform immediately. Moving a conversation to WhatsApp or email before any work starts is often fine; sending payment off-platform before you've delivered anything removes the escrow and dispute protection you're paying commission for.
  • Assuming Payoneer pays out to M-Pesa directly. It doesn't. Kenyan freelancers either withdraw Payoneer to a bank first, or use Upwork's direct M-Pesa option where it's available.
  • Buying or renting someone else's account to get around country restrictions. It's against every platform's terms, and you can lose everything in the account with no recourse if it's flagged.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best freelance website for beginners in Africa?

Fiverr is the easiest to start on: you create a gig and clients order directly, with no application or proposal. Freelancer.com comes next for picking up small, low-paid jobs while you build reviews, before you move to better-paying platforms like Upwork. If you haven't picked a skill yet, see our 6 freelance skills you can learn online in 6 months.

How much do Upwork and Fiverr actually charge in fees?

Upwork charges 0–15% per contract, shown to you before you accept, with many enterprise contracts landing near 10%. Fiverr takes a flat 20% on every order, so you keep 80% of what the client pays.

Can Nigerians receive PayPal payments directly now?

Yes. Since 27 January 2026, Nigerians can link their PayPal account to a Paga wallet and receive international payments, settling them in naira. Before this, a Nigerian PayPal account could send money but never receive it.

Is Payoneer or PayPal better for African freelancers?

For Kenyans, Payoneer's flat $1.50 local withdrawal fee is the cheapest route. For Nigerians, Ghanaians and South Africans, Payoneer's fee runs 1.2%–4%, so it's worth comparing against PayPal's new Nigeria route or your platform's direct bank transfer option case by case.

Do I have to pay tax on freelance income from foreign clients?

Yes. Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and every other country SwiftPesa covers treat freelance earnings as taxable income regardless of which currency or platform pays you. Register with your tax authority and declare it the same way you would local income.

Are Andela and Gebeya still freelance marketplaces I can join?

No, not in the way Upwork or Fiverr are. Both have shifted to selling talent-sourcing and vetting platforms to companies rather than running an open marketplace individual freelancers sign up to directly.
