Fiverr vs Upwork: Which Pays African Freelancers More in 2026?

Fiverr charges a flat 20% seller fee. Upwork dropped its flat 10% for a 0-15% rate per contract. Here is what each actually costs African freelancers in 2026.

Fiverr keeps 20% of every order, so a $100 job leaves you $80. Upwork takes 0–15% per contract, according to its Freelancer Service Fee page, which usually works out cheaper.

But the fee isn't everything. How fast you get paid, and how easily the money reaches Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana or South Africa, matter just as much. Here's how the two compare, checked October 2026.

How Fiverr and Upwork actually work

Fiverr works with Gigs: you publish a service ("I will design a logo", "I will write SEO blog posts") at a fixed price, and clients buy it directly. There's no approval and no bidding, so you're live the moment you publish.

Upwork works with job posts. Clients describe what they need, and you send a proposal using Connects, which are tokens you spend to apply. New accounts also go through a profile review before they can bid, and some African applicants don't pass on the first try.

Both let you work with clients in dollars, euros, and pounds, and neither restricts Kenyan, Nigerian, Ghanaian, Ugandan, or Tanzanian freelancers from signing up, which is more than some platforms offer. For more on which other sites are usable from Africa, see our guide to freelance websites that pay Africans.

Fees: what you actually keep

Fiverr: a flat 20%, no exceptions. Fiverr's earnings help page says plainly that "for every order you complete, you earn 80% of the purchase amount, including Gig Extras and tips." A $100 order leaves you $80, whether it's your first sale or your thousandth. There's no discount for volume.

Upwork: variable 0%–15%, not the old flat 10%. This is the detail most articles comparing the two platforms still get wrong. Upwork's current Freelancer Service Fee page says the fee "ranges from 0% to 15% per contract" and is shown to you before you accept an offer or send a proposal, then stays fixed once the contract begins. There's no official way to get a discount on it.

Worked example on a $500 project:

Fee charged Fiverr Upwork
20% (Fiverr's only rate) You keep $400 —
15% — You keep $425
10% (close to the old flat rate) — You keep $450
0% (rare, contract-dependent) — You keep $500

Fiverr's gig model can still win on volume: for beginners, lots of small, quick orders often add up faster than waiting on Upwork proposals. But on a single well-paid contract, Upwork's usual fee beats Fiverr's flat 20% every time.

Getting paid in Africa: withdrawal fees and timing

Fiverr pays out through three main methods, all confirmed on its withdrawal help page:

Method Fee Minimum withdrawal Typical time
PayPal $0 $1 24 hours
Bank transfer via Payoneer $1 $20 1–3 days (local currency) or 5–7 days (USD wire)
Payoneer account $3 $10 Up to 2 days

You can withdraw up to $5,000 per transaction. Freelancers who qualify for Early Payout can skip the 14-day clearance period for a 1% fee.

Upwork has more routes into Africa than most comparisons mention, per its Direct to Local Bank and Direct to Wallet pages:

  • Direct to Local Bank: $0.99 per transfer, arriving within four working days. Limits vary by country: Kenya's is $5,000–$20,000, Nigeria's is capped at $3,000, and Ghana's is $20,000.
  • Direct to Wallet: Kenyan freelancers can send earnings straight to M-Pesa, usually within minutes, with the fee built into the exchange rate rather than charged separately. Nigeria and Ghana aren't on this list yet (Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Kenya currently are).
  • PayPal and Payoneer also work outside the U.S., the same as on Fiverr.

Both platforms require the name on your withdrawal account to match your verified account name. A different surname on your Payoneer account or bank will get flagged, so fix it before your first payout, not after.

If you're choosing between PayPal and Payoneer for either platform, our guides to PayPal in Kenya and moving Payoneer funds to M-Pesa break down the real costs step by step. Nigerian freelancers should also see how Payoneer withdrawals to local banks and PayPal-to-Paga transfers compare.

Taxes: Upwork adds Kenya VAT, Fiverr doesn't show one

If your Upwork tax residence is Kenya, Upwork must add Kenya's 16% VAT to its Freelancer Service Fee, membership fees and Connects purchases. It shows the exact charge at checkout and on your invoice, as Upwork's Kenya VAT page confirms. On a $100 fee, that's an extra $16. Fiverr's help centre doesn't list a similar Kenya VAT charge on seller fees.

Either way, what you earn on Fiverr or Upwork is income you're expected to declare at home. The platforms not deducting tax doesn't make it tax-free. Nigerian freelancers should read our breakdown of whether you pay tax on dollar freelance income in Nigeria.

Which one should you pick?

If you're starting with no portfolio and want to earn within days, Fiverr is the easier way in, because there's no approval. You'll just give up 20% of every sale. If you already have a skill clients pay well for (development, finance, virtual assistance, specialist writing), Upwork's fee usually works out cheaper once you land a decent contract, and its payout options (especially Direct to Wallet into M-Pesa for Kenyans) get your cash out faster.

Plenty of African freelancers run both: Fiverr for steady small orders while you build reviews, Upwork for the bigger contracts once you have a track record to show. If you're weighing this against other remote income routes, our guide to remote jobs for Africans with no experience is a good next read.

Mistakes new freelancers make on both sites

  • Don't assume Upwork's fee is 10%. It's set per contract and ranges from 0% to 15%. Check the figure shown before you accept, not what an old blog post says.
  • Name mismatches block withdrawals on both platforms. Your bank, Payoneer, or M-Pesa-linked account name must match your verified profile name, or the payout gets held.
  • Fiverr's standard clearance (14 days) is longer than Upwork's fixed-price milestone clearance (5 days). If cash flow matters, factor that in before picking a platform for urgent income.
  • Connects cost money on Upwork. Budget for them before you start bidding. A run of unanswered proposals uses up Connects with nothing to show for it.
  • Direct to Wallet into M-Pesa is Kenya-only for now. Nigerian and Ghanaian freelancers on Upwork are still routed through Direct to Local Bank, PayPal, or Payoneer.

Frequently asked questions

Does Upwork still charge a flat 10% fee?

No. Upwork replaced the flat rate with a variable Freelancer Service Fee of 0% to 15% per contract. The exact rate is shown before you accept a proposal or offer and stays fixed for that contract's duration.

How much does Fiverr actually take from sellers?

Fiverr takes a flat 20% of every order, including Gig Extras and tips, so you keep 80% of what the buyer pays. Fiverr's own earnings help page confirms this.

Can Kenyan freelancers withdraw Upwork earnings straight to M-Pesa?

Yes. Upwork's Direct to Wallet option lets Kenyan freelancers send earnings to M-Pesa, usually arriving within minutes, with the currency conversion built into the exchange rate rather than charged as a separate fee.

Which platform pays out faster, Fiverr or Upwork?

Upwork usually releases money faster for fixed-price work: 5 days after a client approves a milestone, compared with Fiverr's standard 14 days (7 days if you're on Seller Plus, TRS or Pro Talent). Upwork's hourly contracts take 10 days.

Is Fiverr or Upwork better for a beginner in Africa?

Fiverr is usually the easier start: no profile approval, and you can publish a Gig and get your first order within days. Upwork tends to pay more per project once you're established, but new accounts go through a review first and you'll need Connects to bid on jobs.

Do I pay tax on Fiverr or Upwork income in Kenya or Nigeria?

Yes. Income from either platform is taxable at home, whether or not the platform deducts anything. Upwork also charges Kenyan freelancers 16% VAT on its own fees (not on your earnings), which is separate from your personal income tax.
