Payoneer works in Cameroon, and it's one of the main ways Cameroonian freelancers get paid by Upwork, Fiverr and clients abroad. You receive in dollars, euros or pounds, then withdraw to your bank in Cameroon.

Expect to pay 1% to receive and 1.2% to 4% to withdraw, and there's no official withdrawal to MTN MoMo or Orange Money. Because the CFA franc is tied to the euro, you can see what Payoneer's exchange rate costs you. Fees are from Payoneer's fee page, checked October 2026.

Use the euro peg to check Payoneer's rate

The Central African CFA franc (XAF) is fixed at 655.957 francs per euro. That makes Cameroon unusual: you always know the "true" rate for euros.

So if you hold a euro balance in Payoneer and withdraw to your bank in francs, compare the rate Payoneer offers with 655.957:

Payoneer offers (per €1) Your cost on the conversion
649.40 1%
642.84 2%
629.72 4%

Tip: if a client can pay you in euros, ask for euros. The euro-to-franc conversion has a fixed reference point, so it's easy to check you're getting a fair rate. A US dollar payment has to be converted at the day's dollar rate, which is harder to check.

What €1,000 from a client costs through Payoneer

Step Cost
Receiving fee (1%) €10.00
Withdrawal to your bank (1.2%–4% of €990) €11.88 – €39.60
Total €21.88 – €49.60
You receive (at the peg, less fees) about 623,000 – 642,000 FCFA

At the peg, €1,000 is 655,957 FCFA. After Payoneer's fees, you'd receive roughly 623,000 to 642,000 FCFA, depending on where your withdrawal falls in the 1.2%–4% band.

How to set up Payoneer in Cameroon

  1. Sign up at payoneer.com with your legal name exactly as on your national ID card or passport, Cameroon as your country, and your email and phone number. Payoneer shows the services available for Cameroon during sign-up.
  2. Verify your identity with your ID or passport, and proof of address if asked.
  3. Link your Cameroonian bank account for withdrawals. The account holder's name must match your Payoneer name.
  4. Connect your platforms. Choose Payoneer as your payout method in Upwork or Fiverr settings, or share your receiving account details with direct clients.
  5. Withdraw to your linked bank, checking the franc amount shown before you confirm. Payoneer says local bank withdrawals typically arrive within one to three business days.

Can I withdraw Payoneer to MTN MoMo or Orange Money in Cameroon?

Not through Payoneer itself. Some third-party services offer to take your Payoneer funds and pay you on MTN MoMo or Orange Money. They're outside Payoneer's protection, and you can't check their rates and reliability in advance, so be careful.

The safer route is to withdraw to your bank, then move money to mobile money if you need it. Withdrawing from mobile money then costs 1% plus the 0.2% tax on MTN MoMo; see our guide to MTN MoMo and Orange Money charges in Cameroon.

How to pay less with Payoneer

  1. Withdraw in bigger, less frequent amounts. If a minimum fee applies, a US$20 minimum is 10% of a US$200 withdrawal.
  2. Get paid in euros where possible, and check Payoneer's rate against 655.957.
  3. Avoid the US$29.95 annual fee by receiving over US$6,000 a year, or withdraw everything and close the account if you stop freelancing.
  4. Skip the card for cash. ATM withdrawals with conversion cost US$3.15 plus up to 3.5%.
  5. Ask direct clients about bank transfers in euros. It may cost you less than receiving into Payoneer.

What about PayPal in Cameroon?

PayPal's official list of countries where account holders can receive and withdraw money doesn't include Cameroon, which is why Payoneer is the usual choice for Cameroonian freelancers. Kenyan freelancers, by comparison, pay a flat US$1.50 to withdraw Payoneer locally; see Payoneer to M-Pesa in Kenya, and Nigeria's costs are in our Payoneer in Nigeria guide.
