MTN Mobile Money charges in Cameroon for 2026: transfers to another MoMo account carry no MTN fee, only the government tax of 0.2% plus 4 FCFA, so sending 10,000 FCFA costs 24 FCFA. Withdrawals cost 1% plus that tax: 64 FCFA on 5,000 FCFA and 604 FCFA on 50,000 FCFA, with a minimum of 54 FCFA and a maximum of 4,004 FCFA. Orange Money Cameroon also charges nothing of its own on transfers (0.2% + 4 FCFA) and lists withdrawals at 1% + 4 FCFA, so withdrawing 50,000 FCFA costs 504 FCFA. Both grids are from the operators' own tariff pages, checked in October 2026.

One caution on Orange: its grid shows withdrawals as "1% of the amount + 4 FCFA" and doesn't say whether the 0.2% transfer tax is included in that or added on top. MTN's grid adds it on top. If Orange also adds it, Orange withdrawals cost the same as MTN's. The confirmation screen shows your exact total.
What is the 0.2% mobile money tax in Cameroon?
The 0.2% is the taxe sur les transferts d'argent (TTA), the money transfer tax created by Cameroon's 2022 Finance Law (article 228 quater of the General Tax Code). It is charged automatically on mobile money transfers and withdrawals with every operator, according to Lefisk's guide to Orange Money and the TTA. Both MTN and Orange add a further 4 FCFA per transaction, which MTN's grid labels as part of the TTA.
So when you send 100,000 FCFA, you pay 200 FCFA (0.2%) + 4 FCFA = 204 FCFA, and almost all of it goes to the state, not the network.

The same price applies whether you use *126# or the MoMo app. Merchant payments are free for the customer.
This zero-fee transfer price was publicised in March 2026, when MTN said transfers are free apart from taxes and withdrawals cost only 1% excluding taxes, Camer.be reported via AllAfrica.

Old figures still online. Many MoMo tariff charts still show withdrawals at about 1.5%. Under MTN's current grid, withdrawing 5,000 FCFA costs 64 FCFA, not the 75 FCFA older charts suggest.

Which is cheaper in Cameroon: MTN MoMo or Orange Money?
- Sending money: the same. Neither charges its own fee, so you pay only the 0.2% + 4 FCFA tax on either network.
- Withdrawing small amounts: the same, at 54 FCFA, up to about 4,166 FCFA.
- Withdrawing 5,000 to 400,000 FCFA: Orange's published grid is cheaper (1% + 4 FCFA against MTN's 1.2% + 4 FCFA), if Orange doesn't add the 0.2% on top. At 100,000 FCFA, that's 1,004 FCFA against 1,204 FCFA.
- Withdrawing more than 333,333 FCFA: MTN caps sooner. At 350,000 FCFA, MTN charges 4,004 FCFA and Orange 3,504 FCFA. At 400,000 FCFA and above, both charge 4,004 FCFA.
- Paying merchants: free on both, and you skip the withdrawal fee entirely.
What sending cash really costs. Say you send 50,000 FCFA to your mother in Bamenda and she withdraws it. On MTN: 104 FCFA to send + 604 FCFA to withdraw = 708 FCFA, about 1.4%. On Orange (published grid): 104 + 504 = 608 FCFA.
How to pay less
- Pay by merchant code instead of cashing out. Merchant payments are free on both networks. If the shop takes MoMo or Orange Money, you save the 1%+ withdrawal fee.
- Withdraw once, not in pieces. Every withdrawal adds the fixed 4 FCFA, and small withdrawals under about 4,167 FCFA cost a flat 54 FCFA, more than 1%.
- Very large withdrawals are capped. Above 333,333 FCFA on MTN (400,000 FCFA on Orange) the fee stops at 4,004 FCFA, so a 500,000 FCFA withdrawal costs under 0.81%.
- Check the screen before your PIN. Both networks show the total fee, tax included, before you confirm.
What to watch out for
- Out-of-date fee charts. Many websites still show MTN withdrawals at around 1.5% and older Orange grids. The operators' own pages are the ones to trust.
- Agents adding a "commission". The fee is deducted from your account automatically. An agent asking for cash on top is overcharging.
- Scams by phone and SMS. Neither MTN nor Orange will ask for your PIN. Messages saying money was sent "by mistake" are a common trick: check your balance with *126# or #150# before you send anything back.
For freelancers getting paid from abroad, mobile money is often the last step. If money comes from Europe or the US, compare remittance apps on total cost; our guide to the cheapest ways to send money to Africa explains how. For business payments across African borders beyond CEMAC, see how PAPSS settles in local currencies. Mobile money pricing looks very different elsewhere: Uganda taxes withdrawals at 0.5% (MTN MoMo and Airtel Money charges in Uganda), and in Sierra Leone Afrimoney transfers are free but cash-outs carry 15% GST on the fee (Afrimoney and Orange Money charges). In Liberia, by contrast, the central bank fixes cash-out at 2% for every network (Orange Money and MTN MoMo charges in Liberia). More guides for Cameroon are on our Cameroon page.
