PayPal in Malawi lets money in, but getting it out is the problem. You can pay, send and even request money, yet there's no reliable way to withdraw a PayPal balance to a Malawian bank.

So for freelancers, money can arrive in PayPal and then get stuck. A direct bank transfer is the safer route: through Wise, a US$1,000 payment arrived as about MK1,631,921 on our 21 October 2026 check.

Sources: PayPal's Malawi site and PayPal's developer list of countries where account holders can receive and withdraw money, checked October 2026. That list includes Kenya, Botswana and Lesotho, but not Malawi.

Malawi sits in between. Unlike Namibia and Zambia, where PayPal offers only paying and sending, the Malawi site shows request and business features. But without a confirmed way to withdraw to a local bank, money received into a Malawian PayPal account has nowhere useful to go. Before you ask a client to pay you by PayPal, log in and check whether a withdrawal option appears for your account.

What about PayPal's PYUSD in Malawi?

In May 2026, PayPal added Malawi to the rollout of PYUSD, its US dollar stablecoin, tech.africa reported. Users in the new markets can buy, hold, send and receive PYUSD in their PayPal accounts. The report says the stablecoin converts to local currency on withdrawal, but doesn't say how withdrawals work in Malawi or to which banks. Until PayPal explains it, don't count on PYUSD as a way to cash out freelance income. Stablecoins also carry their own risks and fees.

What paying with PayPal costs in Malawi

Paying a merchant with PayPal is free unless currency is converted. When PayPal converts currency, its exchange rate includes a 4.0% fee for Malawi, according to PayPal's fee page (updated 28 September 2026).

Before relying on a Malawian bank card for subscriptions or purchases abroad, check its limit for international payments with your bank.

How Malawian freelancers can get paid instead

1. Direct bank transfer through Wise

Your client pays through Wise straight into your Malawian bank account in kwacha. Wise's public price comparison on 21 October 2026:

Client sends Wise fee You receive (approx.)
US$200 US$21.98 MK308,628
US$1,000 US$58.69 MK1,631,921
£500 £30.73 MK1,089,640

Wise used a rate of MK1,733.67 per US dollar that day. The fee is a larger share of small payments: about 11% on US$200, 5.9% on US$1,000. Invoice less often, in larger amounts.

2. Payoneer

Upwork, Fiverr and many other platforms pay out through Payoneer. Malawi isn't on Payoneer's list of countries with the cheap US$1.50 local withdrawal, so withdrawing to a Malawian bank falls in Payoneer's 1.2%–4% band, plus 1% to receive into a foreign-currency receiving account (Payoneer fees). You see the options available for Malawi when you sign up.

3. SWIFT transfer to your bank

Any client can pay your Malawian bank by international transfer. It works with every bank but costs more on small amounts. Ask your bank what it charges to receive and what rate it converts at.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Asking clients to pay you on PayPal before you've confirmed you can withdraw. Money can sit in your account with no way out.
  • Registering PayPal under another country. Using a foreign address so receiving options appear breaks PayPal's rules, and accounts get limited.
  • Selling your PayPal balance to individuals. Informal "exchangers" often pay well below the real rate, and there's no protection if they don't pay.
  • Forgetting the 4% conversion fee on purchases and subscriptions.

If you'd rather put dollar income to work locally, Malawi treasury bills start from MK10,000. For how PayPal works in neighbouring countries, see PayPal in Zambia, and for a country where it fully works, PayPal in Kenya. More Malawi guides are on our Malawi page.
