Payoneer works in Zambia, and it's how many Zambian freelancers get paid by Upwork, Fiverr and clients abroad. The downside is the cost of getting the money out.

Receiving into a dollar, pound or euro account costs 1%. Withdrawing to a Zambian bank costs another 1.2% to 4%, and there's no direct withdrawal to Airtel Money or MTN MoMo. Fees are from Payoneer's fee page, checked October 2026.

Payoneer fees for Zambia at a glance

What Fee
Opening an account Free
Receiving from another Payoneer user Free
Receiving from Upwork, Fiverr and other marketplaces Varies by marketplace
Receiving into a USD/GBP/EUR receiving account 1% (minimum US$1)
A client paying you by card Up to 3.99% + US$0.49
Withdrawing to a Zambian bank 1.2% – 4% (a minimum of up to US$20 may apply)
Converting between your own Payoneer balances 0.5%
Annual account fee US$29.95, only if you receive under US$6,000 in any 12 months
Payoneer card US$29.95 a year; ATM withdrawals with conversion: US$3.15 + up to 3.5%

Zambia isn't on Payoneer's list of countries that get the US$1.50 flat fee for same-country, local-currency withdrawals. That list includes Kenya, the EU, the US and a few others. So the percentage band applies to Zambian withdrawals.

What US$1,000 from a client really costs

Say a client pays you US$1,000 into your Payoneer USD receiving account, and you withdraw it to your Zambian bank:

Step Cost
Receiving fee (1%) US$10.00
Withdrawal to your bank (1.2%–4% of US$990) US$11.88 – US$39.60
Total US$21.88 – US$49.60 (2.2%–5.0%)

The exact withdrawal percentage and exchange rate show in your account before you confirm. Payoneer doesn't publish the precise rate for Zambia.

Compare: a client paying your bank directly through Wise. On 21 October 2026, Wise's public price comparison showed US$1,000 arriving as about K19,840 after a US$21.35 fee (2.1%), at the mid-market rate of K20.27 per dollar. If your client is willing to pay by bank transfer, that's often cheaper than routing through Payoneer. Payoneer makes the most sense when a platform only pays out through it.

How to set up Payoneer in Zambia

  1. Sign up at payoneer.com with your full legal name (exactly as on your NRC or passport), Zambia as your country, and your email and phone number. Payoneer shows the services available for your country during sign-up.
  2. Verify your identity with your NRC or passport, and proof of address if asked.
  3. Add your Zambian bank account in the withdrawal section. The account name must match your Payoneer name exactly, or withdrawals may be held.
  4. Connect your platforms. On Upwork or Fiverr, choose Payoneer as your payout method in the platform's payment settings. For direct clients, share your Payoneer receiving account details or send a payment request.
  5. Withdraw by choosing your linked bank and checking the kwacha amount and rate shown before you confirm. Payoneer says withdrawals usually reach local banks within one to three business days.

Can I withdraw Payoneer to Airtel Money or MTN MoMo?

Not directly. Payoneer withdraws to bank accounts. Once the kwacha is in your bank, you can move it to Airtel Money or MTN MoMo through your bank's app. See Airtel Money charges in Zambia for what the mobile money side costs.

Be careful with people offering to "buy" your Payoneer balance and send you kwacha on mobile money. These deals are outside Payoneer's protection, rates are often poor, and some are scams.

How to pay less with Payoneer

  1. Withdraw less often, in bigger amounts. If a minimum fee applies, small withdrawals cost far more in percentage terms: a US$20 minimum is 10% of a US$200 withdrawal.
  2. Keep receiving over US$6,000 a year, or withdraw everything and close the account if you stop freelancing, to avoid the US$29.95 annual fee.
  3. Ask direct clients to pay by bank transfer where possible. It can cost less than receiving into Payoneer and withdrawing.
  4. Avoid the card for cash. ATM withdrawals with currency conversion cost US$3.15 plus up to 3.5%.
  5. Check the rate before confirming. Compare the kwacha figure Payoneer offers with the day's mid-market rate to see what you're really paying.

What about PayPal?

PayPal doesn't let Zambian accounts receive or withdraw money, so Payoneer and direct bank transfers are the main options for Zambian freelancers. See our guide to PayPal in Zambia. Once your dollars are in kwacha, you can put some to work in Zambian treasury bills, from K1,000. Kenyan freelancers pay a flat US$1.50 to withdraw locally; see our guide to Payoneer to M-Pesa in Kenya. More Zambia guides are on our Zambia page.
