PayPal in Namibia: You Can Pay With It, but Not Get Paid
PayPal in Namibia lets you pay and send, but not receive or withdraw. No 2026 launch has been announced. What freelancers use instead, with real costs.

In this guide▾
Yes, PayPal works in Namibia, but only one way. You can shop online and send money, but you can't receive payments or withdraw a balance to a Namibian bank.
That's a problem if clients abroad want to pay you. For most freelancers the practical fix is a direct bank transfer through a service like Wise: a US$1,000 payment arrived as about N$15,674 on our October 2026 check.
What PayPal can and can't do in Namibia
| Namibia | For comparison: Kenya | |
|---|---|---|
| Pay online with PayPal | Yes | Yes |
| Send payments to friends and family | Yes | Yes |
| Receive or request money | Not offered | Yes |
| Business account / accept payments | Not offered | Yes |
| Withdraw to a local bank | Not offered | Yes |
This comes from comparing PayPal's own country sites in October 2026. The Namibia site offers only "Send payments" and shopping. The Kenya site adds Business, Accept Payments, Request Money, Invoicing and a guide to withdrawing, none of which appear for Namibia. PayPal's user agreement says service availability varies by country and that you can see what's available by logging in. PayPal's own developer documentation agrees: its list of countries where PayPal account holders can receive and withdraw money includes Kenya, Botswana and Lesotho, but not Namibia.
Is there a new PayPal launch in Namibia?
Not that PayPal has announced. "PayPal Namibia launch 2026" is a popular search, but we found no announcement from PayPal or any Namibian bank about receiving or withdrawing in Namibia. Be wary of videos and websites promising a "new way" to withdraw PayPal in Namibia.
What about the FNB PayPal withdrawal service?
FNB's PayPal withdrawal service is a South African service: it moves money from South African PayPal accounts into FNB South Africa accounts. It isn't available for PayPal accounts registered in Namibia or for FNB Namibia accounts, even though both banks share the FNB name.
What paying with PayPal costs in Namibia
Buying from an online shop with PayPal is free unless a currency conversion is involved. When PayPal converts currency for a payment, its exchange rate includes a 4.0% fee for Namibia, according to PayPal's fee page (updated 28 September 2026). Paying a US$100 bill from a Namibian card through PayPal can therefore cost about US$4 more than the base exchange rate.
Tip: if a shop accepts cards directly, compare paying with your FNB, Bank Windhoek, Standard Bank or Nedbank card without PayPal. Your bank's foreign transaction fee may be lower than PayPal's 4%.
How freelancers in Namibia can get paid instead
1. Direct bank transfer through Wise
Your client sends money from their Wise account (or pays Wise by card or bank) straight to your Namibian bank account in Namibian dollars. On 21 October 2026, Wise's public price comparison showed:
| Client sends | Wise fee | You receive (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| US$200 | US$19.09 | N$2,964 |
| US$500 | US$28.19 | N$7,730 |
| US$1,000 | US$43.36 | N$15,674 |
| £500 | £23.11 | N$10,464 |
Wise uses the mid-market rate (N$16.38 per US dollar that day) and charges a visible fee, so your client sees the total before paying. The fee as a share of the payment falls as the amount rises: about 9.5% on US$200, 4.3% on US$1,000.
2. Payoneer
Many freelance platforms (Upwork, Fiverr and others) pay out through Payoneer. Payoneer accepts members from many African countries but doesn't publish a public list of withdrawal options; you see what's available for Namibia during sign-up. Check the withdrawal fees and exchange rate before you rely on it.
3. A SWIFT transfer to your bank
Any client can pay a Namibian bank account by international (SWIFT) transfer using your bank's SWIFT code and your account number. It's widely accepted, but fees on both ends can be high for small amounts. Ask your bank what it charges to receive.
Mistakes to avoid
- Linking your PayPal to someone else's account abroad. Using a relative's South African or overseas PayPal to receive your money breaks PayPal's rules. Accounts can be limited and funds held for months.
- Paying for "PayPal withdrawal" services. Agents who "buy" your PayPal balance at a discount often pay far below the real rate, and some disappear with the money.
- Ignoring the conversion fee. PayPal's 4% applies every time it converts currency for you.
Once your income is coming in, see how it's taxed with our guide to PAYE in Namibia, and compare the cost of sending money on to family with eWallet charges in Namibia.
