Registering for your National Identification Number (NIN) at a NIMC centre in Nigeria is free, and it stays free the first time you do it. As of October 2026, the only NIN services that cost money are the ones that come after registration: correcting a wrong date of birth is ₦28,574, fixing your name, phone number or address is ₦2,000 per change, and replacing a lost or damaged slip through the regular channel is ₦600, all confirmed in NIMC's 2025 price review. If you just need a copy of your slip, you don't have to pay anyone at all: NIMC's NINAuth app now gives you a free digital copy in minutes.

How much does NIN registration cost in Nigeria?

Nothing, for the registration itself. NIMC's own statement confirms initial enrolment and your first slip are free, and that part of the price structure hasn't changed since the commission last revised its fees in May 2025, after a decade of holding them flat. What you pay for is fixing a mistake or replacing something afterwards:

  • Date of birth correction: ₦28,574, up from ₦16,340 — a 75% jump NIMC says reflects a decade without a price review and 32.7% inflation.
  • Name, phone number or address correction: ₦2,000 per field, up from ₦1,522.
  • Lost or damaged slip, regular re-issuance: ₦600, up from ₦500.
  • Checking or retrieving your NIN by USSD (*346#): ₦50, up from ₦20, deducted from your airtime as part of the same review.
  • VIP enrolment at a licensed premium lounge or visa centre: ₦20,000.
  • VIP slip re-issuance: ₦3,500.

If you're enrolling from outside Nigeria, the diaspora price list is separate: NIMC's foreign mission fees are $50 for an adult and $30 for a child at centres in African countries, rising to $60 for an adult at centres outside Africa, with a $55–60 date-of-birth correction and $6 slip re-issuance.

As of October 2026, this 2025 fee list is still the one in force — there's no newer official schedule on NIMC's site, so treat any price quoted elsewhere with caution and check nimc.gov.ng if you're reading this much later than the date above.

If an agent or "helper" outside a NIMC centre asks you to pay for your first registration, that's a red flag — walk away. The only time money changes hands legitimately at that stage is for printing on plain paper at a business centre, which is a few hundred naira for the printing, not the slip itself.

How do I register for a NIN?

  1. Gather one acceptable document. An international passport, driver's licence, voter's card, old National ID card, birth certificate, NHIS card, a government or recognised employer's staff ID, or a school ID all work. If you have none of these, a declaration of age plus an attestation letter from a religious or traditional leader in your community is accepted instead.
  2. Pre-enrol online if you can. NIMC's pre-enrolment portal at penrol.nimc.gov.ng lets you type in your biodata from home and print a summary slip with a barcode. This step is optional and skips some of the form-filling at the centre, but it does not replace the next step.
  3. Visit an enrolment centre for your biometrics. NIMC requires everyone, pre-enrolled or not, to appear in person to have their fingerprints, photo and signature captured. NIMC Enrolment Centres (ERCs) run in all 36 states and the FCT, and since February 2026 NIMC has been rolling out smaller ward-level centres so people don't have to travel as far.
  4. Collect your NIN. NIMC generates your 11-digit NIN and your first slip, typically within 1 to 5 working days of your biometrics being captured, depending on network connectivity at the centre that day.

Registering is not something you can do entirely online. You can fill in your details on the pre-enrolment portal in advance, but the biometric capture — the part the NIN system is actually built around — happens in person.

Minors need an original birth certificate plus a parent or guardian's own NIN slip at enrolment. If you're registering for a child who's about to sit WAEC, NECO or JAMB, do it early: NIMC has made a NIN compulsory for 2026 exam candidates, and centres get busy closer to registration deadlines.

How do I check or retrieve my NIN?

If you've forgotten your NIN or lost your slip, dial *346# from the phone number you registered with. It works on MTN, Airtel, Glo and 9mobile, and costs ₦50, deducted straight from your airtime — NIMC's 2025 price review raised this from ₦20, so don't trust an older guide that still calls it free. An in-person retrieval query at a NIMC centre costs ₦75, and a card inquiry by SMS is ₦50 — dialling *346# is still the cheapest and fastest option for most people.

You can also:

  • Open the NINAuth app (Android or iOS) and sign in. Your NIN and biodata show on screen immediately.
  • Visit dashboard.nimc.gov.ng and log in with your registered phone number.
  • Ask your bank, if your NIN is already linked to your account — most banking apps display it in your KYC or profile section.

How do I print or download my NIN slip?

Since July 2026, NIMC's NINAuth app lets you preview and download an official copy of your slip for free — no agent, no queue, no charge. NIMC's own words on the update: "Not a payment to an agent. Not a trip across town." The same free download works through dashboard.nimc.gov.ng if you'd rather use a browser.

That's the standard (sometimes called "regular") slip: a digital document with your 11-digit NIN, name, date of birth, QR code and photo. It's accepted for SIM registration, JAMB, WAEC, NECO, NYSC mobilisation and most bank KYC checks. Some private printers and agents still advertise a "premium" coloured or laminated version for a fee — since the free app download covers what almost every official use case actually needs, there's rarely a reason to pay for one unless an embassy or specific institution insists on it in writing.

What to watch out for

  • Fake NIN "registration" websites. Only penrol.nimc.gov.ng, dashboard.nimc.gov.ng and the NINAuth app (downloaded from the Play Store or App Store, not a link in a text message) are official.
  • Agents charging more than the official fee. Printing your slip through the NINAuth app and your first registration are free; checking your NIN by USSD is a flat ₦50 charged by your network, not by any agent. If someone quotes you more than that, or charges you anything at all for registration or app-based printing, you're paying for their time in a queue, not an official fee.
  • Sharing your NIN carelessly. It's the key to a lot: SIM cards, bank accounts, a POS agent application, even your Tax ID, which is now generated straight from your NIN. Treat it like you would your BVN: share it only with the bank, telecom provider or government portal that actually needs it, including fintech apps like PayPal integrations in Nigeria that ask for it during KYC checks.
  • Giving up a NIN slip as "proof" to unlicensed lenders or betting sites. Legitimate services verify your NIN against NIMC's database; they don't need you to upload a photo of your slip to a random link. Before you upload it anywhere to borrow money, check whether the loan app itself is actually FCCPC-licensed — that matters more than how much ID you hand over.

Frequently asked questions

How much is NIN registration in Nigeria?

Free, for a first-time enrolment and your first slip. The only costs come afterwards: ₦28,574 to correct your date of birth, ₦2,000 per field to correct your name, phone number or address, and ₦600 to replace a lost or damaged slip, confirmed in NIMC's 2025 price review and still current as of October 2026.

Can I do NIN registration online?

Partly. You can fill in your biodata in advance at NIMC's pre-enrolment portal, but you still need to visit a NIMC enrolment centre in person to have your fingerprints, photo and signature captured. There is no fully remote way to get a first NIN.

How long does NIN registration take?

The enrolment itself — filling the form and capturing your biometrics — usually takes a few minutes once it's your turn. NIMC then needs 1 to 5 working days to generate your NIN and first slip, depending on network connectivity at the centre.

What's the difference between my NIN and my NIN slip?

Your NIN is the 11-digit number itself. Your NIN slip is the document — paper or digital — that shows that number alongside your name, date of birth, photo and a QR code. You can have the number without a slip in hand, which is exactly what the USSD code and NINAuth app are there to fix.

How much does it cost to print or reprint my NIN slip?

Downloading and printing your own copy through the NINAuth app or dashboard.nimc.gov.ng is free. Going through NIMC for a formal replacement of a lost or damaged slip costs ₦600 for the regular version; VIP re-issuance at a licensed lounge is ₦3,500.

What happens if I don't have a NIN?

You won't be able to register or keep a working SIM card, open or fully use a bank account, or sit exams like WAEC, NECO or JAMB, since NIMC and the relevant agencies now require it. Under Nigeria's new tax system, it's also your Tax ID — so without it, you can't get one of those either. You'll also need it to enrol in NHIA's GIFSHIP health cover if you're self-employed or informal. It's worth registering even if nobody is asking for it from you this month; you'll need it eventually. Once your NIN-linked Tax ID is live, our Nigeria PAYE tax calculator shows what the 2026 bands mean for your actual take-home pay.
