The fastest way to check your TIN number in Ghana: look at your Ghana Card. The Personal Identification Number (PIN) printed on it, formatted GHA-123456789-1, has been your Taxpayer Identification Number since the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) made the change on 1 April 2021 — no separate lookup needed. To confirm it's correctly registered and active, enter it at the GRA TIN verification tool — it returns "VALID" if everything matches. This applies to individuals only; companies still use a separate GRA-issued TIN starting with C. As of October 2026, this is still how the GRA runs it.
Where do I find my TIN if I have a Ghana Card?
You already have it. The GRA stopped issuing new TINs to individuals and now uses the Ghana Card PIN as the sole tax identifier. Turn your card over (or look at the front, depending on the print run) and find the number in the format GHA-123456789-1. That whole string, dashes included, is what you type into tax forms, bank KYC forms, and the TIN field on the Ghana.gov and GRA portals.
There's no separate card, PDF or number to request. If someone asks you for your "TIN" and you only have a Ghana Card, give them the Ghana Card PIN — it's the same thing for individual taxpayers.
How do I verify my TIN online?
- Go to the GRA Verify TIN tool.
- Enter your Ghana Card PIN (format
GHA-123456789-1) or, if you were issued one before 2021, your old TIN (formatP0012345678). - Submit the form and wait for the result.
- A correct, active registration shows as "VALID". An error or "not found" usually means your Ghana Card hasn't been linked to your tax record yet, or you mistyped a digit.
The tool is built for personal TIN checks. The GRA is explicit that this tool is "only for Personal TIN verification and not for Company TIN" — a business needs its own corporate TIN checked at a GRA Taxpayer Service Centre instead.
I don't have a Ghana Card yet — can I still get a TIN?
Yes, but you get it by registering for a Ghana Card, not by applying to GRA separately. The National Identification Authority (NIA) runs registration desks inside GRA offices in several regions specifically so taxpayers can sort out both at once. Book or walk in at an NIA centre (check current locations at nia.gov.gh) or one of the GRA Taxpayer Service Centres with an NIA desk, bring your birth certificate, passport or existing citizenship documents plus your digital address, and register. Once the card is printed, the PIN on it is live as your TIN.
If you're weighing up whether to register now or wait, our Ghana Card cost guide breaks down the current NIA fees — registration itself is GH¢30 for adults and free under 25, separate from anything GRA charges (GRA doesn't charge for tax registration).
What happened to the old GRA-issued TIN?
Before April 2021, GRA issued individuals a TIN directly, in the format P0012345678. From 1 April to 31 December 2021, GRA ran both numbers side by side so people had time to switch over. Since 1 January 2022, the Ghana Card PIN is the only individual TIN GRA recognises — the old P-number on its own no longer works for new filings.
If your bank, employer or a government portal still has your old P-number on file, you'll want to link it to your Ghana Card PIN rather than just switching numbers cold — see the next section.
How do I link my old TIN to my Ghana Card PIN?
GRA built a self-service portal for exactly this at myid.gra.gov.gh. You'll need:
- Your old 11-digit TIN (the P0... number).
- Your Ghana Card details: the PIN, your surname and forenames exactly as printed, and your date of birth.
- A working email address and phone number — GRA sends an OTP to confirm the link request.
Submit the form and you can check progress under "Link TIN Status" on the same site. Once approved, your records under the old TIN move across to your Ghana Card PIN, so payslips, bank accounts and GRA filings all point to one number.
Do businesses use the Ghana Card PIN too?
No. The change only covers individual taxpayers. Registered companies, partnerships and other organisations keep their own GRA-issued TIN, which starts with C rather than P or the Ghana Card's GHA prefix. To register a business TIN, first incorporate with the Registrar-General's Department — see our guide to registering a business in Ghana for the ORC fees and steps — then take the certificate to any GRA Taxpayer Service Centre with the organisational TIN form. Sole proprietors trading under their own name still use their personal Ghana Card PIN for the business.
What you actually need your TIN/PIN for
Your Ghana Card PIN isn't just a tax detail — GRA lists it as a requirement for:
| Where you'll be asked for it | Who asks |
|---|---|
| Filing or paying any tax return | GRA |
| Opening or updating a bank account | Banks (KYC) |
| Registering a business name or company | Registrar-General's Department |
| Vehicle registration and driving licence | DVLA |
| Passport application | Immigration |
| Clearing goods at the port or airport | Customs Division, GRA |
| Land registration | Lands Commission |
| Investing in government securities, e.g. Treasury bonds | Bank of Ghana / brokers |

Your employer uses the same PIN to report your monthly PAYE deductions to GRA — see our guide to how PAYE is calculated in Ghana if you want to check your payslip against the current 2026 bands. The same Ghana Card PIN is also what SSNIT uses to merge your pension record, so if your SSNIT contributions aren't showing up correctly, a mismatched or unlinked number is usually why.
What to watch out for
- Typing errors kill the verification check. The Ghana Card PIN has to be entered exactly as printed, dashes included. A single wrong digit gives you "not found" rather than an error message telling you what's wrong.
- Don't pay anyone to "get you a TIN". Registering is free through GRA and the Ghana Card fee goes to NIA directly — there's no separate GRA charge to activate your PIN as a TIN.
- A pending Ghana Card application isn't a TIN yet. If you've registered but the card hasn't been printed, you don't have a working TIN. Some services will accept your Ghana Card receipt number temporarily; most won't, so plan ahead if you have a tax deadline or a bank account to open.
- Old paperwork with your P-number still matters. Don't throw away records that reference your old TIN — link it through myID rather than assuming the systems will match automatically.
- Other countries run the same play. Tanzania has moved the same way, with TRA now issuing TINs off your NIDA national ID number instead of a standalone application.

Frequently asked questions
Is my Ghana Card number the same as my TIN?
Yes, for individuals. Since 1 April 2021, the Personal Identification Number (PIN) printed on your Ghana Card — the GHA-123456789-1 number — is your Taxpayer Identification Number. You don't apply for a separate TIN.
How do I check my TIN number online in Ghana?
Use the GRA Verify TIN tool. Enter your Ghana Card PIN or old TIN and submit; a valid, correctly linked registration shows as "VALID".
What is the format of a Ghana TIN?
For individuals it's your Ghana Card PIN, formatted GHA-123456789-1. Companies and other organisations use a separate GRA-issued TIN in the format C0012345678.
Can I still use my old TIN number?
Not on its own for new individual filings — GRA phased that out after 31 December 2021. Link it to your Ghana Card PIN through myid.gra.gov.gh so your history carries over.
I don't have a Ghana Card. How do I get a TIN?
Register for a Ghana Card at an NIA centre or a GRA office with an NIA desk. The PIN on the card that's issued becomes your TIN automatically — there's no extra GRA step for individuals.
Do I need a TIN to open a bank account in Ghana?
Yes. Banks ask for your Ghana Card PIN as part of standard KYC checks before opening any account, in line with GRA's requirement that the PIN be used wherever a taxpayer needs to be identified.
