If you've tried to open an Outlier account from Kenya and hit a wall, it isn't your ID or your internet. Kenya simply isn't on the list of countries Outlier accepts right now.

That's why so many people end up in WhatsApp groups selling "verified Outlier accounts". Before you send anyone money, here's what Outlier's own rules say, what usually happens to bought accounts, and where Kenyans can find the same kind of AI training work legitimately.

Quick answer: Outlier in Kenya at a glance

Question Short answer (October 2026)
Can I sign up for Outlier from Kenya? No. Kenya is not on Outlier's list of permitted countries.
Which African countries are on the list? Algeria, Cameroon, Egypt, Madagascar, Malawi, Morocco, South Africa and Tanzania
Can I use a VPN? No. Outlier bans using a VPN to hide your location.
Can I buy or rent someone else's account? It's against Outlier's rules. Buying or selling accounts is banned outright.
What happens if I'm caught? The account is deactivated, and any unpaid earnings in it are usually lost.
Is there legit work like Outlier open to Kenyans? Yes. Platforms such as Mindrift, CrowdGen (Appen) and OneForma take Kenyan sign-ups for some projects.

Sources: Outlier's Flexible Working Guidelines (effective 15 July 2026) and Community Guidelines.

Is Outlier AI available in Kenya?

Not at the moment. Outlier publishes the countries you can work from in its Flexible Working Guidelines, and the version that took effect on 15 July 2026 doesn't include Kenya. It doesn't include Nigeria, Ghana or Uganda either.

When you sign up, Outlier checks your identity and location with a government-issued ID. The country on that ID becomes your "Primary Location". A Kenyan ID or a Kenyan phone number is therefore enough to stop the sign-up, however good your skills are.

Some projects have even tighter rules. Outlier says its customers can limit a project to specific countries or regions, so being in an approved country doesn't guarantee work either.

Outlier is run by Scale AI, the same company behind Remotasks. Thousands of Kenyans did AI training tasks on Remotasks until it shut down in Kenya in March 2024 (Business Daily). Many of them went looking for a way onto its sister platform, and that demand is what created the market for bought accounts.

Can you buy an Outlier account in Kenya?

You'll find plenty of people offering to sell one. But buying one breaks Outlier's rules, and the odds are stacked against you.

Outlier's Community Guidelines say contributors must not:

  • share account login details with anyone else,
  • create more than one account, or change account details falsely,
  • misrepresent who they are or where they are, or
  • sell or buy accounts.

The same rules ban using a VPN to mislead Outlier about your location or identity.

What actually goes wrong with bought accounts

An investigation by AlgorithmWatch (May 2025) followed this black market closely. Several of the sellers it found used Kenyan phone numbers. Three problems kept coming up:

  1. The seller keeps asking for more. One seller offered a European Outlier account for $70, then wanted $30 for a "fraud extension" and another $50 before handing over the login.
  2. The account gets banned. Outlier told the reporters it investigates flagged accounts and deactivates them. One "team lead" said 40 accounts used by his Kenyan workers had been blocked.
  3. You don't control the money. Payouts go to the real owner's payment details. Renters often hand over 40–50% of what they earn, and when an account is banned, whatever is waiting to be paid usually goes with it.

There's also an identity risk. Some sellers ask for the codes sent to your phone or for photos of your ID, and those can be used for other fraud.

Our honest view: even when a bought account works for a few weeks, you're building your income on something that can vanish overnight with your pay inside it. Most people do better putting the same effort into a platform that accepts them.

How to tell an Outlier account scam

Walk away if you see any of these:

  • Someone wants payment before you get anything, especially in crypto or through a "middleman" you've never heard of.
  • The price keeps rising after you've paid ("verification fee", "fraud extension", "activation").
  • They ask for an OTP, an M-Pesa code or your ID photos.
  • They promise a "lifetime" or "ban-proof" account. No such thing exists.
  • They tell you to use a VPN or a "residential proxy" so the account looks foreign.

Legitimate AI training platforms never charge you to join.

Can you sign up for Outlier if you live in Tanzania, South Africa or Malawi?

Yes. If you live in one of the listed countries and hold an ID issued there, you can apply directly at outlier.ai. On the current list, that covers Tanzania, South Africa, Malawi, Cameroon, Madagascar, Egypt, Morocco and Algeria.

The ID has to match where you live. A Kenyan using someone else's Tanzanian ID falls under the same ban on misrepresenting who you are, and is treated the same way.

Legit AI training jobs that accept Kenyans

Outlier isn't the only company paying people to train AI. These platforms do similar work, such as rating chatbot answers, writing and checking prompts, and labelling data, and they take Kenyan sign-ups for at least some projects:

Platform What the work looks like Good to know
Mindrift (by Toloka) AI training projects for writers, editors and subject experts Toloka's AI training platform. Projects depend on your skills and language.
CrowdGen (by Appen) Data collection, search rating, transcription and AI training projects You're matched to projects after sign-up. Many have a short test.
OneForma Transcription, translation, data labelling and rating Each project sets its own language and residence rules.
Fiverr and Upwork Data entry, labelling and AI-related gigs for clients Slower to start, but you control your own account.

Eligibility changes often, and each project has its own rules. Always check on the platform's own sign-up page, and treat the first month as practice while you qualify for better-paid tasks.

How Kenyans get paid from AI training platforms

Most of these platforms pay in US dollars through Payoneer, PayPal or a bank transfer. In Kenya, both Payoneer and PayPal can send money to M-Pesa, but the fees and exchange rate vary a lot.

Money you earn online is still income. If it becomes regular, read up on how Kenya taxes it before tax season, not after.

Skills that get you better-paid AI training work

The highest-paying projects on Mindrift, CrowdGen and others usually go to people with a specialism: accounting, law, medicine, coding, maths, or strong writing in a second language like Swahili or French. Frequently asked questions

Is Outlier AI legit?

Yes. Outlier is a real platform run by Scale AI, and it pays contributors in the countries it supports. The problem for Kenyans isn't that Outlier is fake. It's that Kenya isn't on its list of permitted countries.

Why does Outlier say "not available in your country"?

Because the country on your ID or your location isn't on Outlier's permitted list, or because a specific project is limited to certain countries. For Kenyan IDs, it's the first reason: Kenya isn't on the list as of the July 2026 guidelines.

Will Outlier open in Kenya again?

Nobody outside Outlier knows. The country list has changed before and could change again. If it does, the Flexible Working Guidelines page is where it will show first, not WhatsApp groups.

How much does Outlier pay in Kenya?

Nothing officially, because Kenyans can't sign up. Pay on Outlier depends on the project, your skills and the country you're approved in. Anyone quoting a fixed "Kenya rate" for a bought account is guessing, and the owner of the account gets paid, not you.

Can I use a VPN for Outlier?

No. Outlier's Community Guidelines ban using a VPN or similar tools to mislead it about your location, unless a platform administrator specifically asks you to use one. Accounts flagged for it can be deactivated.

What is the best Outlier alternative in Kenya?

For most people, Mindrift or CrowdGen (Appen) is the closest match, because the work is similar AI training and both take Kenyan sign-ups for some projects. Sign up for more than one, as work on any single platform comes and goes.
