Monthly PAYE bands under the Income Tax Act Cap 332, with effect from 1 July 2021 and confirmed unchanged for 2026/2027 by TRA's own rate table. Employee NSSF (10%) is deducted before PAYE. Employers pay a matching 10% NSSF plus, with 10+ Mainland staff, a 3.5% Skills Development Levy — neither comes out of your pay.

About this calculator
On a gross salary of TZS 800,000, you pay TZS 80,000 to NSSF and TZS 60,000 in PAYE, taking home TZS 660,000 — bands confirmed current for the 2026/2027 tax year as of October 2026.
How it's worked out
- NSSF comes off first. Your 10% employee NSSF contribution is the only deduction Tanzania's Income Tax Act allows against employment income before PAYE is calculated.
- What's left is taxed in five monthly bands: nil up to TZS 270,000, then 8%, 20%, 25% and 30% on income above TZS 1,000,000.
- Your employer pays more, but not from your pocket: a matching 10% NSSF contribution, and, if they have 10 or more staff on the Mainland, a 3.5% Skills Development Levy (4% in Zanzibar, from 4+ staff).

Frequently asked questions
What is the tax-free threshold for PAYE in Tanzania?
Monthly taxable income (gross pay minus your 10% NSSF contribution) of TZS 270,000 or less is tax-free — about TZS 3,240,000 a year on a fixed salary.
How much NSSF do I pay in Tanzania?
Employees pay 10% of gross pay to NSSF, matched by another 10% from the employer, for a combined 20%. There's no salary cap, so the 10% applies at every income level.
Does NSSF reduce my taxable income?
Yes. Your 10% employee NSSF contribution comes off your gross pay before PAYE is worked out — it's the only deduction the Income Tax Act allows against employment income.
How much tax do I pay on a gross salary of TZS 1,000,000 a month?
NSSF takes TZS 100,000, leaving TZS 900,000 taxable. PAYE on that comes to TZS 103,000, so you take home about TZS 797,000.
Is the Skills Development Levy taken from my pay?
No. SDL is 3.5% of gross emoluments on the Mainland, paid by employers with 10 or more staff, on top of your salary — it never comes out of what you earn.
Do non-resident employees pay PAYE the same way?
No. Non-residents pay a flat 15% of gross employment income as a final tax, not the progressive bands above.
