About this tool
Change the flock size, egg or broiler prices and feed costs, and the preview updates instantly: capital needed, first profitable month, break-even and profit for two years. A small M-Pesa payment unlocks the full plan as an editable Word document, an Excel workbook with live formulas and a PDF for a loan application.
Example: 500 layers started from day-old chicks need roughly half a million shillings before the eggs pay their way; broilers need much less and pay back faster.
What's in the poultry business plan
Every plan is written for your farm, with your business name, location and numbers, and follows the structure banks, SACCOs and grant programmes expect:
- Executive summary: what the farm does, how much it needs and when it pays back.
- The business: ownership, product and goals for two years.
- Market and customers: 2026 Kenyan egg or broiler prices, who buys, and the competition.
- Marketing and sales: how you'll find and keep buyers.
- Operations: housing, birds, feeding, health, biosecurity and records.
- Management and staff, and licences and permits.
- Financial plan: start-up costs, working capital, profit and cash flow by quarter, an annual summary, every assumption with its source, and what-if scenarios.
- Risks and how to manage them, and sources.
The Excel workbook holds the same numbers month by month. Change any yellow input (egg price, feed price, flock size) and every month, total and the summary recalculate.
Layers or broilers: how the numbers compare
For a 500-bird farm at 2026 prices:
| Layers, from day-old chicks | Layers, from ready-to-lay pullets | Broilers, 500 a batch | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capital needed | the most: months of feed before the first eggs | high, because pullets cost more | the least |
| First profitable month | about half a year in | within a couple of months | within a couple of months |
| Income | steady and daily once laying | steady, then a dip when restocking | lumpy, batch by batch |
| Main risk | slow payback | replacing the flock | a price drop or disease hits a whole batch |
Layers are slower to start: chicks take about four months to lay, and that time is all feed and no eggs. Once laying, they bring in money every day and suit someone who can sell eggs locally week after week. Starting with ready-to-lay pullets earns sooner but costs more, and the plan budgets for buying a new flock when the first one is sold off.
Broilers turn money over fast, a batch every two months, but every batch depends on finding buyers at the right price on the day the birds are ready. A price drop or a disease outbreak hits a whole batch at once.
These figures are a starting point. Your own prices for chicks, feed, eggs and broilers make the biggest difference, which is why every number in the plan can be changed.
How to write a poultry business plan
- Decide the product and scale. Eggs or meat, and how many birds you can house, feed and sell.
- Price everything locally. Chicks, feed, housing, labour, and what buyers near you pay. Feed is the biggest running cost.
- Work out the timeline. Layers lay from about 18 weeks; broilers sell at about six weeks.
- Calculate the capital. Start-up costs plus the working capital to buy feed until sales cover costs. Many plans underestimate the second part.
- Test the risks. What happens to profit if prices fall or feed costs rise 10%?
- Write it up in the standard sections lenders expect.
The builder above does steps 3 to 6 for you from your numbers.
Frequently asked questions
How much capital do I need to start a poultry farm in Kenya?
For 500 layers started from day-old chicks, roughly half a million shillings at 2026 prices, and about half of that is feed for the months before egg sales cover costs. Many first plans forget that part. A 500-bird broiler unit needs much less, because the first batch sells in its second month. Enter your own numbers above for your figure.
Is poultry farming profitable in Kenya?
It can be, but margins depend on feed costs and selling prices. Feed is 60–70% of running costs, so a few shillings on the price of a tray or a bag decides whether a small farm makes money. Profit falls fast if egg or broiler prices drop or feed costs rise, so test those scenarios before you invest.
Which is more profitable, layers or broilers?
On the default 2026 numbers, broilers make more per year and pay back faster, but they carry more market risk on each batch. Layers give steadier daily income once in lay. The right choice depends on whether you can sell eggs every week or broilers every two months.
How long does it take for layers to start laying?
About 18 weeks from day-old chicks, according to the Hy-Line Brown guide: first eggs at around 18 weeks, 50% production at about 20 weeks and peak lay of over 90% from about 23 weeks under good management.
Can I use this business plan for a bank loan?
Yes. The plan follows the standard structure lenders ask for, and the Excel workbook lets you show the bank how the numbers change. Check the key prices locally first, so the plan matches your farm.
