How M-Pesa charges work
Safaricom charges a flat fee per transaction band, not a percentage. That makes larger amounts relatively cheaper: sending KES 10,000 costs KES 90 (0.9%), while sending KES 600 costs KES 13 (2.2%).
A few ways to pay less:
- Send, don't withdraw, when you can. Withdrawing KES 10,000 costs KES 115, more than sending it (KES 90).
- Watch the band edges. KES 2,500 costs KES 33 to send; KES 2,501 costs KES 53.
- Pay tills directly. Buy Goods payments cost the customer nothing.

Can I withdraw less than KES 50?
No. Agent withdrawals start at KES 50, which costs KES 11.
