Remitly charged $6.99, though your first transfer with it is free. One more cost to remember: if the money lands in mobile money, your family pays a 2% fee to cash it out.

Quotes from each provider's public pricing on 21 October 2026, for standard (not first-time) transfers. Remitly waived its fee on the first transfer when we checked.
What it means in practice:
- Small, regular amounts: at $50 and $100, Sendwave's fee is a fifth to a quarter of Remitly's standard fee; at $200 it's about half.
- $500: the two are within 20 cents.
- $1,000: Sendwave's fee stays at $9.79, against Remitly's $15.99.
- Sendwave's fee rises in steps. $200 costs $3.79, but $500 and $1,000 both cost $9.79. If you send monthly, combining two months into one $1,000 transfer costs less than two $500 transfers ($9.79 against $19.58).
The full cost: transfer fee plus the 2% cash-out
Money sent to a mobile money wallet in Liberia arrives in full, but taking it out as cash costs 2% on every network. The Central Bank of Liberia set that standard fee from 1 August 2025. See our guide to Orange Money and MTN MoMo charges in Liberia.
Sending $200 for your mother in Buchanan to withdraw as cash:
| Step | Cost |
|---|---|
| Sendwave fee | $3.79 (paid by you) |
| 2% cash-out on $200 | $4.00 (paid by her) |
| Total | $7.79, about 3.9% |
If she pays for things straight from her Orange Money or MoMo wallet instead of withdrawing, the $4.00 disappears. Orange Money transfers to other Orange Money users are free.
To make sure she has the full amount in hand, send about $204: 2% of $204 is $4.08, which leaves her about $199.92.
USD or Liberian dollars?
Liberia uses both currencies. Most transfer apps pay out in US dollars, which avoids an exchange rate margin. If your relative needs Liberian dollars for market purchases, they can convert in their mobile money wallet: Orange Money converts between USD and LRD at the Central Bank-regulated rate. For reference, the Central Bank of Liberia's market rate on 21 October 2026 was L$169.50 (buying) to L$171.54 (selling) per US dollar.
How to choose the cheapest option
- Compare the fee for your exact amount. Fees rise in steps, so the cheapest service at $100 isn't always the cheapest at $1,000.
- Send in US dollars unless the recipient specifically needs Liberian dollars.
- Bundle small transfers. One larger transfer usually costs less than several small ones.
- Use first-transfer promotions once. Remitly's free first transfer is worth taking; compare standard fees afterwards.
- Pay with a bank account or debit card. Credit cards can add a cash-advance fee.
What about Western Union, MoneyGram and WorldRemit?
These also send to Liberia, including cash pickup, which helps if the person receiving doesn't use mobile money. They don't show public quotes without signing in. When you compare, ask the same question: how many dollars arrive, and what does it cost in total, including the fee and any exchange margin if it's paid out in Liberian dollars.
Watch out for
- Exchange margins on LRD payouts. If a service pays out in Liberian dollars, compare its rate with the Central Bank's daily rate.
- Name mismatches. The recipient's name must match their mobile money or ID registration.
- Scams. Never send money to someone you've only met online who asks for "fees" to release a parcel, visa, job or inheritance.
- "Send it to my agent" requests. Send to the recipient's own registered wallet or bank account, not a third party's.
Freelancers and remote workers in Liberia getting paid from abroad face similar costs; the digital skills that earn in dollars guide is a good place to start, and once salary or freelance income is regular, see how LRA income tax applies to it.
