NSSF Uganda takes 5% of your gross monthly wage from your pay and 10% from your employer — 15% in total — for every formally employed worker, and that rule now applies to every employer, however small. If you're self-employed, informal or want to save beyond that, NSSF's Smartlife Flexi plan lets you save from UGX 5,000 whenever you like. For the year to 30 June 2026, NSSF declared a record 22.53% interest on members' savings. Here's how the numbers work, how to check your real balance (not the old USSD code still floating around online), and when you can actually touch the money — checked against NSSF Uganda's own pages and Ugandan press reporting in October 2026.

How much is NSSF in Uganda right now?
NSSF's own site puts it plainly: contributions are "5% and 10% respectively of the employee's gross monthly wage," from the employee and employer (NSSF Uganda, About Us). Add the two together and 15% of your gross pay goes into your NSSF account every month, even though only 5 percentage points come off your payslip directly.
This is a statutory deduction, not a choice. It sits alongside PAYE, but the two don't interact the way some people assume — Uganda Revenue Authority taxes your full gross pay first, and NSSF comes off separately afterwards, so your NSSF contribution doesn't reduce your taxable income. We've broken that down with worked examples in our guide to Uganda's PAYE tax bands; run your own numbers through the Uganda PAYE calculator to see both deductions side by side.
Every employer now has to register — not just the big ones
Until 2022, only employers with five or more workers had to register with NSSF; smaller outfits could join voluntarily. The NSSF (Amendment) Act, 2021 — assented to on 2 January 2022 — removed that threshold. The updated law now requires "every employer, irrespective of the number of employees" to register as a contributing employer (Daily Monitor, "NSSF law starts biting employers"). NSSF later gave employers a formal 30-day window, from 28 March 2023, to get compliant regardless of staff size (Eagle Online).
In practice: if you run a small bakery, salon or shop in Uganda and you've hired even one person on a payroll, you're legally required to register with NSSF and remit 15% of their gross pay monthly. There's no small-business exemption left. You'll need a URA TIN on the employer record alongside your NSSF and URSB numbers, so sort that first if you haven't — see our guide on finding or generating your URA TIN number online.
Who's covered — and who isn't
NSSF's mandatory scheme only applies to formal employer-employee relationships. If you're self-employed, running a side hustle, working in the informal sector, or living in the diaspora, nothing forces you to contribute — but you can join voluntarily (see Smartlife Flexi below). There has been talk of Cabinet eventually extending mandatory coverage to informal workers, but as of October 2026 this has not become law, so don't assume it applies to you yet.
How to check your NSSF Uganda balance (ignore the old USSD codes)
A lot of pages online still quote a *254# USSD code or an SMS-to-6773 process for checking your NSSF balance. Those trace back to an older NSSF mobile platform from around 2015–2017 and don't appear anywhere on NSSF's current official site. Don't rely on them — if a USSD code for NSSF shows up in a forwarded message or an old blog post, confirm it's still active by calling NSSF's toll-free line before you use it.
The channels NSSF itself lists today are:
- NSSF Go app or web portal. Download "NSSF Go" from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, or use nssfgo.app in a browser. Log in to see your current balance, your last transaction, and a mini e-statement.
- Call the toll-free line. Dial 0800286773 from any network, free of charge, and ask the call centre to confirm your balance (NSSF Uganda contact page).
- WhatsApp or email. NSSF also takes balance queries on WhatsApp (+256 784 259 713) or by email at customerservice@nssfug.org.
- Visit in person. NSSF's head office is at Workers House, 14th Floor, Plot 1 Pilkington Road, Kampala, or any regional branch.
If you're an employer, the same NSSF Go portal is where you submit contributions and register new employees, rather than through a bank or URA.
NSSF Smartlife Flexi: voluntary savings if you're self-employed
If you're not in formal employment — or you are, and want to save more than the mandatory 15% — NSSF's voluntary product is called Smartlife Flexi. It launched on 20 November 2024, under the National Social Security Fund (Voluntary Contributions and Benefits) Regulations, 2024 (NSSF Uganda media centre).
Who can join: Ugandan citizens aged 16 and above (including diaspora, using their National ID Number), non-citizens resident or working in Uganda with a valid passport, and refugees with a valid ID. You don't need to already be an NSSF member or work in a registered company.
What it costs and how it works:
- Minimum contribution: UGX 5,000 per deposit (NSSF Uganda Savings Digest). If you open an account through an agent rather than the app, NSSF's own FAQ page quotes a UGX 10,000 minimum initial deposit, so expect the opening amount to differ slightly from later top-ups (NSSF Uganda, Tulikukyalo FAQ).
- You choose the amount, frequency and how long you save — there's no fixed monthly schedule.
- Minimum one-year lock-in. You can exit earlier if you need to, at a cost NSSF describes only as "minimal" without publishing an exact percentage, so ask the specific figure before you commit money you might need back soon.
- Interest is calculated on your daily balance and credited monthly — not once a year like the mandatory scheme (see below).
- Sign up through the NSSF Go app, or at any of the more than 20,000 Quickteller agents nationwide under NSSF's partnership with Interswitch. Agent sign-up needs your National ID and a phone number registered in the same name, and the agent service itself is free.
The uptake has been real: NSSF says Smartlife Flexi passed UGX 5 billion in voluntary savings within about three months of launch, with roughly 70% of savers putting in small, regular amounts (NSSF Uganda media centre). It sits alongside other ways to invest in Uganda if you're weighing it against SACCOs, unit trusts or Treasury bonds.
How much interest does NSSF Uganda pay on savings?
For the mandatory scheme, NSSF declares one interest rate a year, credited to every contributing member's account after its Annual General Meeting. For the financial year ended 30 June 2026, NSSF declared 22.53% — the highest rate the Fund has ever paid out, up from 13.5% the year before — announced at its 14th Annual Members' Meeting in Kampala on 24 September 2026 (Daily Monitor, "NSSF declares record 22.53% interest on members' savings"). That credited Shs5.444 trillion to members' accounts in total.
Worth knowing before you get too excited: Monitor's own analysis notes part of that record figure reflects revaluation gains on NSSF's investments rather than guaranteed cash income, so treat 22.53% as last year's result, not a promised future rate.
Smartlife Flexi voluntary savings work differently — interest there is worked out daily and paid into your account monthly, rather than declared once a year, so don't assume your voluntary balance earns exactly the same annual rate as your mandatory one.
When can you withdraw your NSSF money?
NSSF's own benefits page sets out four main ways to access your mandatory savings before full retirement:
| Benefit | Who qualifies | How much |
|---|---|---|
| Midterm Benefit | Age 45+, at least 10 years of contributions | Up to 20% of accrued benefits |
| Midterm Benefit (members with disabilities) | Age 40+, at least 10 years of contributions | Up to 50% of accrued benefits |
| Withdrawal Benefit | Age 50+, out of formal employment for at least 1 year | Full accrued benefit |
| Age Benefit | Age 55, employed or not | Full accrued benefit |
(Source: NSSF Uganda, Midterm Benefit and NSSF Uganda, Benefits.) There's no requirement to have left your job to claim the Age Benefit at 55 — NSSF pays it "whether they are still in active employment or not." Survivors, invalidity and emigration benefits also exist for members who die, become incapacitated, or leave Uganda permanently, but each has its own conditions worth confirming directly with NSSF. If you're claiming a large lump sum in cash, plan ahead: from 1 January 2027, Bank of Uganda caps over-the-counter cash withdrawals at UGX 50 million a day for individual accounts.
Mistakes that cost NSSF Uganda members money
- Trusting an old USSD code or SMS shortcode you found online. Confirm any shortcut through NSSF's toll-free line before entering your details anywhere.
- Confusing NSSF Uganda with Kenya's NSSF. They're separate funds in separate countries with different rates, apps and rules — a lot of "how to check my NSSF balance" content online is actually written for Kenya.
- Assuming your NSSF deduction lowers your PAYE bill. It doesn't — URA taxes your gross pay before NSSF comes off.
- Treating a small business as exempt from registering. One employee is enough to require NSSF registration since the 2022 law change; backdated penalties can be steep.
- Locking up money in Smartlife Flexi that you'll need within a year. Early exit comes at a cost NSSF hasn't published as a fixed percentage, so ask first.
Frequently asked questions
Is NSSF Uganda the same as NSSF Kenya?
No. NSSF Uganda and Kenya's NSSF are entirely separate funds run by different governments, with different contribution rates, apps and withdrawal rules. If a guide mixes Kenyan Shillings or a Kenyan USSD code into "NSSF Uganda" advice, it's talking about the wrong fund. Zambia's NAPSA has a similar early-access rule but with lower bars: NAPSA's 20% partial withdrawal is open from age 45 or after 60 monthly contributions.
What is the NSSF Uganda USSD code for checking my balance?
NSSF Uganda's current official site doesn't list an active USSD code. Older codes like *254# circulating online date back to around 2015–2017 and aren't confirmed as still working. Use the NSSF Go app or website, or call the toll-free line on 0800286773 instead.
Can self-employed or informal workers save with NSSF in Uganda?
Yes, through Smartlife Flexi, NSSF's voluntary savings product launched in November 2024. You don't need a formal employer — sign up through the NSSF Go app or a Quickteller agent with your National ID, and start from UGX 5,000.
Can I withdraw my NSSF money before age 55 in Uganda?
Partly. From age 45, with at least 10 years of contributions, you can access up to 20% of your accrued benefits under the Midterm Benefit (50% if you have a disability, from age 40). From age 50, if you've been out of formal employment for a year, you can claim the full Withdrawal Benefit. Full access without conditions comes at 55.
How much interest does NSSF Uganda pay on savings?
NSSF declared 22.53% for the year to 30 June 2026 — a record — up from 13.5% the previous year. That rate applies to the mandatory scheme and is declared once a year; Smartlife Flexi voluntary savings earn interest calculated daily and paid monthly instead.
Do small employers in Uganda have to register for NSSF?
Yes. Since the NSSF (Amendment) Act, 2021 took effect, every employer must register as a contributing employer regardless of how many people they employ — the old five-employee threshold no longer applies.
