How EcoCash charges work
EcoCash charges a percentage, not a flat fee. On every USD send you pay EcoCash's 1.3% plus the government's 2% IMTT tax, so 3.3% in total. Cashing out costs 1.7%, with no tax.
That makes the real cost of sending cash to someone about 5%. Send US$100 to a relative and you pay US$3.30; they pay US$1.70 to cash it out. US$5 of every US$100 is gone.
A few ways to pay less:
- Keep small payments at US$5 or under. They're free. US$5.01 already costs US$0.17.
- Use wallet-to-bank, not ZIPIT, to move money to your own account. It's 1.5% with no tax, capped at US$20.
- Compare cash with paying by EcoCash. A merchant payment costs 4% with IMTT. If the shop gives the same price in cash, cashing out at 1.7% is cheaper.
- Use ZiG for local payments when you can. IMTT on ZiG is 1.5% instead of 2%. Our EcoCash charges guide has the ZiG table.
